Member Engagement & Program Volunteer Opportunities

Below are the current Member Engagement & Program volunteer opportunities available to the Association membership.

All volunteers are required to be current members of the Association during the terms of appointment. If you have not renewed your membership, please do so before apply for a position. Initial training and committee meetings will be conducted at the 2017 Annual Meeting in the Volunteer Kickoff.

  

Awards & Recognition Chair and Committee

The Awards & Recognition Chair and Committee recognizes those individuals who have maintained high professional standards in the advisement of fraternities and sororities, and who have excelled in educational programming, student development, research and experimentation within the profession. This committee also seeks to recognize individuals, institutions, organizations, programs, and publications that advance the interfraternal movement at the highest level.

 

Responsibilities

  • The Chair will lead the Awards & Recognition Committee to the successful completion of the awards nomination and selection process.
  • The Chair and Committee will be primarily responsible for the review and selection process for all submitted nominations. Additional “guest judges” may be selected by the Chair where deemed appropriate.
  • The Chair, Committee, and designated AFA staff member(s) will identify forums/marketing to promote the awards process and then execute intended marketing plans.
  • The Committee will assist in the development of the award winner biographies, script and PowerPoint/multimedia materials for the presentation of awards and any additional onsite needs of the awards presentations at the Annual Meeting.
  • The Committee will be responsible for the development of press releases and recognition letters to be sent to various institutions/organizations of award recipients.
  • The Chair (in consultation with Central Office staff) will provide leadership to the Committee to periodically review AFA Awards & Recognition (including identified awards, selection process, recognition of recipients, AFA Standard Operating Procedures Manual, etc.) to ensure the Awards process best meets the needs of the Association.
  • Participate in initiatives directed by the AFA staff or Board of Directors.

Qualifications

  • Membership within the Association for a minimum of 1 year prior to appointment.
  • Knowledge base of the interfraternal movement allowing them the ability to participate in the selection of top awards.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once Represent the Association professionally at all times.

Commitment Required

  • The appointment concludes with the distribution of all press releases and recognition letters following the Annual Meeting.
  • Committee members should be prepared to serve approximately 1-2 hours a month.
  • The Chair will be required to give 3-5 hours a month.


Regional Directors and Regional Membership Engagement & Recruitment Teams

Regional Directors promote the mission and programmatic benefits of the Association within their respective regions, supervise the activities and programs of regionally-based committees or workgroups, and promote the Association to potential new members. Regional Directors oversee the work of the Regional Membership Engagement & Recruitment Team in their respective regions.

 

The Regional Membership Engagement & Recruitment Teams are regionally based groups with goals of increasing and promoting AFA membership, promoting regional professional development opportunities, enhancing communication amongst/within the region, and publicizing opportunities and benefits provided to association members. 
 

Responsibilities

  • Ongoing outreach to both current and prospective members.
  • Identify and contact prospective members (i.e. personal phone calls, emails and social media).
  • Promote professional development opportunities based in their respective region.
  • Provide opportunities for Regional Drive-Ins.
  • Report and provide updates on non-AFA related regional conferences.
  • Keep a pulse on and report on hot topics of conversations within the field.
  • Promote AFA Foundation fundraising efforts.
  • Actively utilize social media to promote various AFA programs, resources and opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Membership within the Association for a minimum of 1 year prior to appointment.
  • Familiarity with the various benefits, services, and resources available to AFA members.
  • Desire to reach out to prospective members.
  • Be employed by an institution or organization in the region s/he represents for at least one year prior to appointment.
  • Regional Directors must be Professional, Graduate, Affiliate, or Emeritus members of the Association.

Commitment Required

  • Regional Directors must devote approximately 2-3 hours per week to assisting with regional project plans and Association goals.
  • Committee members will be asked to participate in monthly 1 hour team meetings.
  • The time requirement will vary based on region size.


Professional Development Committee

The Professional Development Committee will be responsible for aiding the AFA staff in identifying, developing, and implementing the various components of the Associations’ educational strategy. The committee will help integrate the new the Core Competencies into existing programs to better guide the development of educational programming and resources and help create new educational experiences to assist members in their own professional development.

 

Responsibilities

  • Participate in monthly virtual meetings. 
  • In conjunction with AFA staff, help create and analyze the educational needs assessment.
  • Assist in the creation of an educational program schedule based on crucial/relevant topics and member needs.
  • Conduct analysis and research on supporting documents to inform future decision making related to the educational strategy of AFA.
  • Assist in the marketing of programs through personal networks and social media.
  • Participate in initiatives directed by the AFA staff or Board of Directors.

Qualifications

  • Members should be well versed in the issues facing fraternity/sorority professionals.
  • Experience with educational assessments and developing leaning outcomes.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Should be forward-thinking, goal/detail oriented, and team-driven.

Commitment Required

  • Participate in monthly meetings (or more frequently as needed) led by the AFA staff or Committee Chair.
  • Members can expect to spend 2-4 hours per week on committee activities.

Research Committee

The Association’s Research Committee will be responsible for aiding the AFA staff in identifying and facilitating research opportunities that advance the mission of the Association. The Committee will help develop strategic intentionality for the research efforts conducted by, for, and in conjunction with the AFA staff.

 

Responsibilities

  • Participate in quarterly meetings (or more frequently as needed) led by the Chair.
  • Brainstorm research projects that fall under the scope of the mission of the Association that would provide a value-add to the membership.
  • Provide feedback on Association research projects at key points during their lifespans.
  • Assist in facilitating research opportunities among graduate students conducting research that support the mission of the Association and focus areas determined by the Research Workgroup.
  • Locate additional opportunities to conduct research that support the mission of the Association.
  • Participate in initiatives directed by the AFA staff or Board of Directors.

Qualifications

  • Members should be well versed in the issues facing fraternity/sorority professionals as well as the extant research done on them.
  • Experience with and methodological knowledge of how to conduct research so as both to better assess what is viable and also to assist graduate students, as needed, in advising their projects.

Commitment Required

  • Committee members can expect to spend 2-4 hours per week on committee activities.
